Too Slow?

Day 7: Just Did It

We did it. Together 3000 riders raised $11.1 million for AIDS services and rode as much of the 574 miles as each one could.

574 miles, 7 days, 6 nights. Lines for food, for tents, for porta-potties. Lines for showers, for gear, for bikes, to get on the road, to get off the road. Setting up tents, tearing down tents, hauling gear. Eating oranges quartered, bananas halved, Cliff Bars sliced into thirds, and the occasional delectable full strawberry. Drinking water, water, Gatorade, water. Drinking water when I was out of breath. And pedaling, pedaling, pedaling. Little circles with my feet took me from Ft. Mason in San Francisco, down the coast to this point to Los Angeles. We did it. With help, I did it. It was both harder and easier than I imagined.

574 miles.
$13,500 raised for AIDS.
